Commonly Used Terms

Following is a list of terms you'll hear from Menagerie as well as on bookings or photo shoots. Please take a moment to read over and familiarize yourself with them.

Advertising "Ad" Agency: A company that creates and oversees ad campaigns. Art Directors work at an advertising agency and are generally in charge of choosing the photographer who photographs an ad campaign.

Agent: A person who represents and promotes talent and works to procure bookings for that talent. Sometimes referred to as a " talent booker" or "talent coordinator".

Art Director: A person who works on ad campaigns and also on the set of the photo shoot. The Art Director is responsible for the overall look of the finished advertisement.

Assignment: Synonymous with the term booking

Booking: A confirmed assignment for which talent is paid to be a part of a photo shoot.

Brings: Basic clothing items which you may be requested to bring to a confirmed booking. You are never required to purchase requested brings. They should be taken from clothing you already own.

Call Time: The time that your photo shoot begins. You should ALWAYS arrive 15 minutes prior to your call time. NO EXCEPTIONS!!!

Cancellation: When a confirmed booking is cancelled for a particular reason. Talent is generally paid their full fee if the job is cancelled with less than 24 hours notice and half fee with less that 48 hours notice. This does not apply to bookings that are confirmed on a weather permit.

Casting: Also referred to as a "go-see". When prospective talent is requested to go to a photo studio or ad agency to be considered for a particular assignment. Castings/Go-Sees usually take less than 30 minutes.

Client: A "catch-all" term that can refer to an ad agency, photographer or company that hires talent.

Direct Booking: When a client or photographer wants to hire talent without contacting the Talent Agency that represents them. This is against industry standard and is prohibited by Menagerie Models.

Hair/Make-Up Artist: A person or persons who specialize in make-up application and hair styling for photo shoots. Prior to a booking you'll be told if there will be hair and make-up stylists at the booking or if you'll be responsible for arriving with your own hair and make-up completed. It is always smart to have your hair and makeup supplies with you just in case you need them.

Hold: Synonymous with the term "Tentative Booking". Before a booking is confirmed, talent may be put on "hold" for one or more days. This is done when several talent are being considered for the same assignment or when several different dates are being considered.

Location: This refers to the "location" that a booking will take place if it's not at the photographer's studio.

Shoot: short for photo shoot. Synonymous with "booking", "assignment" & "job".

Assistant: Usually refers to "Photographer's assistant". The person(s) who help the photographer with lighting, set-up, etc.

Print Modeling: Refers to modeling for still photographs vs. commercials or film.

Release: A form that is signed following a booking or photo shoot. Talent is asked to sign a release to allow legal use of his/her image. Please don't ever sign a release without prior permission from Menagerie Models. You may unwittingly sign away your rights to future payment from the use of your image.

Set: The area where a photo shoot takes place.

Stock Photography: Refers to existing photographs that are used in ad campaigns. Photographers often shoot images that will be made available as stock photographs. Stock photographs can be used and reused in ad campaigns.

Studio Manager: The person hired to run a photo studio. This person has many responsibilities including scheduling assignments and hiring talent & stylists.

Stylist: Usually refers to the wardrobe stylist. The person who gathers wardrobe for a booking, helps dress the talent & makes sure the clothing looks good while the talent is on set.

Sweep: Also referred to as a backdrop. Paper or fabric used as the background for a photograph. Sweeps can often be very expensive and fragile. Please be careful not to walk on a sweep or backdrop unless instructed.

Tear Sheet: Pieces of printed material featuring a talent's images. Tear sheets show that talent has experience working at a photo shoot.

Tentative Booking: Also referred to as a "hold". Before a booking is confirmed, talent may be put on "hold" for one or more days. This is done when several talent are being considered for the same assignment or when several different dates are being considered.

Usage Rights: Refers to the end use of a photograph in which a talent's image or likeness can be legally used. Menagerie will negotiate this use with the photographer or client previous to a confirmed booking.

Voucher: A form, provided to talent by Menagerie Models, to be filled out following each confirmed booking. The voucher is used to show talents hours worked and also stated the usage rights for each specific booking. Vouchers must be filled out at each confirmed booking and signed by both the photographer or client and talent. If you have a question about your voucher please call Menagerie Models BEFORE signing the voucher.

Weather Permit: If a confirmed booking will be at an outdoor location it may be weather contingent (if not, there is usually an indoor location as a backup). In case of inclement weather a backup date is chosen. When the booking is postponed or cancelled with less than 24 hours notice the talent is generally paid 50% of the full fee.
